PRACTICAL GUIDE

Build a hospital RCM scorecard

Use a shared set of definitions to make operational reporting useful.

Define the measures

Choose a small set of measures such as days in accounts receivable, denial rate, clean-claim rate, and time spent resolving exceptions. Document the numerator, denominator, time window, and source for each. Different definitions can make apparently similar results impossible to compare.

Separate the causes

Segment results by department, payer, or workflow where that distinction can explain the issue. Distinguish a backlog from new incoming work. Pair a financial measure with an operational measure so that teams can see which action could change the result.

Create a review cadence

Assign an owner to each measure and agree on a recurring review. Record the action taken, expected effect, and follow-up date. Avoid treating a single short-term fluctuation as proof of improvement; look for sustained change and unintended consequences.
